Shaping Sound: The Visual Identity of CUBEREC
When CUBEREC emerged in late 2009, founded by local visionaries Casta (Andrés Castaño) and Andres Gatica, it broke new ground as Guatemala's first online electronic music record label. The imprint quickly became a powerhouse for the underground scene, pushing boundaries with deep house, techno, and experimental beats. Designing the album covers for this pioneering label was an exercise in translating audio frequencies into visual experiences. The challenge was to create a visual identity that matched the raw energy and forward-thinking sounds of the label’s diverse roster, establishing a unified aesthetic that felt both deeply rooted in the local culture and universally futuristic.
The creative process behind these covers required a deep dive into the unique sonic landscapes produced by CUBEREC’s artists. Whether capturing the Latin-infused house and acid influences of Gonzo-Gonzo, the vibrant tech-house rhythms of Paulo Sepp, or the heavy techno roots of Gatica and Casta themselves, each design acts as a visual synthesizer. I focused on clean, geometric minimalism and high-contrast color palettes to mirror the technical precision of electronic music production. The artwork deliberately strips away unnecessary noise, utilizing structural shapes, kinetic lines, and digital textures to represent the rhythm, tension, and release that define a great electronic track.
Ultimately, the CUBEREC portfolio stands as a testament to a pivotal era in Guatemala's electronic music culture. These covers do more than simply package tracks for digital distribution; they give a graphic weight to the intangible magic of club culture. This collaboration allowed me to seamlessly merge my passion for structural graphic design with the pulsating heartbeat of the local music scene. By giving geometric shape to the soundwaves of our country's most innovative DJs and producers, the artwork ensures that the legacy of CUBEREC is not only heard on the dancefloor, but instantly recognized at a glance.
