The Visual Rhythm of Advanced Music: Rebranding SMA

For many years, I had the immense privilege of being the visual architect behind the Advanced Music Week (Semana de Música Avanzada, or SMA) in Guatemala. Far more than just a series of events, SMA established itself as a pioneering festival dedicated to the intersection of music, art, culture, and science. It was conceived as a platform to open the minds of young audiences, proving that high-quality, avant-garde cultural events could be successfully executed in our country. Over its various editions, the festival transformed into a vital catalyst for the local scene, bringing together international talent, local creators, and curious minds for an immersive week of workshops, conferences, and groundbreaking performances across Guatemala City.

From a creative standpoint, SMA was always a spearhead for my personal development as a graphic designer. Working on this festival provided me with an extraordinary level of creative freedom that is rarely found in the commercial design world. I was given the trust and space to design exactly what I felt when listening to advanced music, without the traditional roadblocks and limitations. This project allowed me to explore the deep connection between auditory and visual experiences, operating on the philosophy that music is not just something you hear or feel internally, but something you can actually see and touch through thoughtful design.

As the festival grew in scale and ambition—culminating in the massive 2016 edition—it became clear that its visual identity needed to evolve alongside its programming. What started as a more intimate gathering had expanded into a major cultural movement featuring dozens of artists from around the globe, alongside complex curatorial elements like children's orchestras and contemporary dance performances. The festival required a comprehensive rebranding to reflect this newfound maturity and institutional weight. The new logo and identity system had to honor the underground, experimental roots of the event while presenting a clean, professional, and forward-thinking face to a broader international audience.

The rebranding process for the SMA logo was an exercise in capturing the invisible geometry of sound. Inspired by the festival's focus on electronic and experimental beats, I designed a visual identity that was both structurally minimalist and highly kinetic. This new logo served as the sturdy anchor for a dynamic branding system applied across a wide range of collateral, from massive stage projections and promotional posters to custom-designed notebooks and digital campaigns. By translating the rhythm and technical precision of the music into crisp typographic and geometric elements, the new branding provided a cohesive visual language that resonated perfectly with the festival's futuristic ethos.

Looking back, the rebranding of the Advanced Music Week remains one of the most significant and fulfilling projects in my portfolio. It was a rare opportunity to fuse my passion for graphic design with my love for Guatemala's burgeoning cultural scene. The new identity not only elevated the festival’s public perception but also demonstrated the profound impact that a strong, unified visual language can have on an event's legacy. Ultimately, the SMA rebranding stands as a testament to what we can achieve when art, music, and design intersect with total creative freedom.
